| Significance | On May 18, 1811, in the battle of Las Piedras, Uruguayan national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas, in the early struggle for independence organized a rebel army that decisively routed the Spanish Royalist Army near Montevideo. It is considered Artigas's most important victory against the Spaniards However its success was undone by the entry of Portuguese troops into Montevideo, and by Brazil's subsequent occupation of the area. |
