| Significance | A holiday in the Christian calendar, usually observed on December 25, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. According to the Christian gospels, Jesus was born to Mary in Bethlehem, where she and her husband Joseph had traveled to register in the Roman census. The word Christmas is a contraction of Christ's Mass, derived from the Old English Cristes m?sse and refering to the religious ceremony of mass. Orthodox Christians in Central and Eastern Europe and throughout the world celebrate Christmas on January 7. Christians of the Russian and Serbian Churches as well as the monks of Mount Athos in Greece celebrate Christmas according to the old Julian calendar. Other Churches, including those of Greece and Bulgaria, have switched to the Gregorian calendar and celebrate the holiday on 25 December.
