| Significance | International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world. The holiday began in the 1880s in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day. The 1 May date is used because in 1884 the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, demanded an eight-hour workday in the United States to come in effect as of May 1, 1886. It is observed as a holiday in honor of labor and labor organizations especially in socialist countries. It is not recognized as a holiday in the United States and Canada. |
