Thai Language Facts
Thai is the official language of Thailand, a country with over 65 million people. Thailand is an emerging economy and a newly industrialized country. It has a diverse economy with strong sectors in agriculture, manufacturing, and services, with tourism being a notable contributor. It is a growing population (20th most populous country in the world).
The Thai writing system is very different from the Roman alphabet and many Western languages, in that it uses relatively little punctuation. Thai does use some punctuation marks, albeit not in the same way as in English or other Western languages.
Thai script typically does not use spaces between words within a sentence, but instead uses them to denote the end of a clause or sentence. This can make it difficult for beginners to determine where one word ends and the next begins.
Furthermore, periods aren’t used as frequently in Thai as they are in English. They exist in the form of a small circle (๚ or ๛), used in formal and literary texts to denote the end of a section. In more modern and casual writing, the full stop borrowed from the Roman script is often used.
The question mark, exclamation point, and commas have also been imported from Western languages and are increasingly used in modern Thai, especially in online communication and in materials for foreign audiences. However, their use is not as strict as in English and other languages that use the Roman alphabet.
Thai language also has its unique set of punctuation symbols, such as a pair of parentheses called “Angkhandeeo” (อังคั่นเดี่ยว) and “Angkhandeesong” (อังคั่นเดี่ยว), used for similar purposes as parentheses in English, and a symbol called “Fongman” (ฯ), used as an abbreviation symbol.
